What Grandparents Bring to a Village

The most underused resource in modern parenting is often two streets away.

Community4-minute read

For most of human history, a mother was surrounded. Grandmothers, aunts, neighbours, older children — a village that noticed when she was struggling and stepped in without being asked. That did not disappear because people stopped caring. It disappeared because families moved cities and everyone got busier.

Time, at a different pace

Grandparents are often the only adults in a child’s life who are not in a hurry. That is not a small thing. A slow walk to the postbox with someone who has nowhere else to be is a genuinely different experience from being moved through a schedule.

Children need one adult who is delighted to see them and not watching the clock.

Memory, and the long view

A grandparent who can say “your mother did exactly this at two” hands you something no book can: proof that the phase ends. Perspective is a form of practical support.

Making it work when it is complicated

Not every family has this, and not every version of it is easy. Distance, health, old friction, differing views on how things should be done — all real. Two things help: be specific about what would actually help, and be clear about the handful of things that are not up for negotiation. Vagueness is where most of the tension lives.

And if your family is far away

The role matters more than the bloodline. A retired neighbour, a family friend, an older member of your village — many are quietly looking for exactly this. It is usually a question of asking.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If something here worries you, or you are struggling, please speak to your doctor, midwife or public-health nurse. In an emergency call 911. For urgent mental-health support anywhere in Canada, call or text 988.

Reading this alone is the problem.
