A Mother's Village
What parental burnout is, how to tell it apart from ordinary exhaustion, and what actually reduces it.

Parental burnout is exhaustion caused by caregiving demands that never let up. It typically shows as physical and emotional depletion, emotional distance from your children, and a growing gap between the parent you are and the parent you want to be.
The distinguishing feature is that rest does not fix it. Sleep helps for a day, and then the depletion returns — because the load itself has not changed.
If you need help now: in an emergency call 911. For urgent mental-health support anywhere in Canada, call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time. Haven is a community app, not a crisis service or a substitute for medical care.
If this sounds familiar, it is worth saying plainly: this is a load problem, not a character problem.
Most advice adds something to the list — a bath, a journal, an exercise routine. Burnout is caused by the length of the list. Anything that adds to it, however pleasant, tends not to help for long.
If the exhaustion has lasted months, if you feel hopeless, or if you are struggling to function day to day, speak to your doctor, midwife or public-health nurse. Burnout and depression overlap and can be hard to tell apart from the inside.
Parental burnout is a state of exhaustion caused by prolonged, unrelieved caregiving demands. It commonly shows up as physical and emotional depletion, emotional distancing from your children, and a sense that you are no longer the parent you want to be.
Tiredness improves with rest. Burnout does not — a good night's sleep helps for a day and the depletion returns, because the underlying load has not changed.
Reducing the actual load rather than coping harder with it: handing off specific recurring tasks, regular breaks that are scheduled rather than hoped for, and support from people nearby. Persistent burnout is worth discussing with a health professional.
