A Mother's Village
Small, honest things that fit into a day that isn’t really yours any more.

Most self-care advice assumes a spare hour and a quiet house. This is for the other version — the one where the window is eleven minutes and someone may cry through all of them.
Not a whole routine. One sense. A coffee you actually taste. A song through headphones instead of a speaker. Cold air on your face at the back door. Sensory anchors return you to your own body faster than any amount of thinking about it.
A book on the arm of the chair. A sketchbook. A plant you look after. Not to finish — just to keep. Identity survives on evidence, and evidence can be very small.
You are not trying to get back to who you were. You are staying in touch with who you are becoming.
Ten minutes of walking counts. Stretching on the floor while the baby is on the mat counts. The goal is circulation and a change of scene, not a workout you will resent.
To a partner, a friend, a village thread. “Today was long.” “I liked today.” “I don’t feel like myself.” Naming it out loud stops it from compounding silently.
Twenty minutes where you are not the one listening for the noise is worth more than an hour where you are. If you are lucky enough to be offered, take it — and try not to spend the whole twenty minutes tidying.
If you have been flat, anxious or unlike yourself for more than a couple of weeks, that is not a self-care problem and no list will fix it. That is worth a conversation with your doctor or public-health nurse. One in five mothers experiences postpartum depression or anxiety — it is common, and it is treatable.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If something here worries you, or you are struggling, please speak to your doctor, midwife or public-health nurse. In an emergency call 911. For urgent mental-health support anywhere in Canada, call or text 988.
